What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?
I have many, many hobbies, and I always have several overlapping projects on the go. But if I had to pick just two, tabletop roleplaying games and practicing traditional Chinese martial arts would be the main ones. I like them both so much because they are both multi-faceted, though each in their own ways. Roleplaying games are wonderfully creative and allow me to engage in strategy, collaborative storytelling, and to dive into the joys of rules design. With the martial arts, I love discovering the fascinating body mechanics that underpins each move, and body movement itself is a self-expression for me that brings me great joy. Practice also brings with it a space for mindfulness and a way to center myself.
What architect/artist/designer inspires you and why?
My three favorite living architects right now are Tadao Ando, Thomas Kundig, and the work of BIG. Tadao Ando’s sense of space and light and the sculptural qualities of living are exquisite. Thomas Kundig also has a great sense of light and scale, but with a different palette that embodies grit and mechanics through his “gizmos.” And BIG’s works are highly inventive, taking the brief and the context and wringing the most out of them possible to create something that delights and enlivens both the inhabitants and those who just pass by.
