- What architect/artist/designer inspires you and why?
I was captivated when I visited Carlo Scarpa’s work in Northern Italy, including Tombe Brion, Negozio Olivetti, and Fondazione Querini Stampalia. His style defies design conventions yet feels intuitive and timeless. In something as simple as a concrete staircase, he gives each individual step its own character. Scarpa’s creativity in every detail reminds me to think outside the box and explore architecture’s endless possibilities.
The architect whose work is at the top of my bucket list to visit is Antoni Gaudi. His projects are true works of art that combine sculptural design with remarkable technological innovations. Several of his buildings can be spotted in one of my favorite films, Michelangelo Antonioni’s The Passenger.
- How do you contribute to the community?
For the past several years, I’ve volunteered with the San Diego Architectural Foundation. The organization hosts free events for the community to experience and learn about local architectural landmarks. It’s especially rewarding to see the engagement and excitement from people from all walks of life who often have no prior background in the industry. As a bonus, being a transplant from the Pacific Northwest, this has been a great way for me to learn about the rich history and culture of San Diego.
